The approach Nicklaus Golf Equipment has taken with its Claw fairway woods and hybrids is to lessen the resistance offered to the clubs as they move through grass or over turf (turf drag) in order to help the golfer keep the clubhead moving on its intended line.

Club designer Clay Long explains:

"The concept of reducing turf touch is surprisingly simple. Basically, we've taken the sole of the clubhead and sort of scooped out the flanks. We've created a center runner flanked by thinner stabilizer rails that proved to create less drag through impact, allowing the clubhead to stay online more easily."

The companys says that compared to its previous fairway metal models, the Fairway Claw provides a reduction of 26.1-percent in "turf touch," or sole drag.

The Nicklaus Fairway Claw is available in lofts of 13, 15, 18 and 22 degrees for right-handed golfers; 15 and 18 degrees for lefties. Fifteen- and 18-degree offset models are also offered for righties.

Shaft options include the Fujikura SG Fairway 3.01 in A, R and S flex; and the Fujikura SG Fairway 3.01 in A, R, S and X flexes. The Fairway Claws have an MSRP of $179.99. See Nicklaus Golf for more info.
