There are two big names involved in the newest irons from Nickent: 3DX and John B. Hoeflich.
"3DX" is the name of the weighting technology that Nickent uses in many of its clubs, the best-known of which are probably its 3DX Hybrids.
And John B. Hoeflich? Well, if you're an equipment aficionado, there's a good chance you're familiar with that name. But even if you don't know Hoeflich's name, you surely know the names of the clubs that he has designed, or helped design, over they years: Tommy Armour 845 irons, Titleist DCI irons, TaylorMade rac irons and more.
Hoeflich and Nickent founder and CEO Michael Lee have been friends for many years. Lee has described Hoeflich as his mentor in the golf business. And now, after a recent move, Hoeflich is a senior vice president at Nickent Golf. The 3DX Irons are his first design for the company.
The challenge for Hoeflich this time was, according to Nickent, to create "the highest level of game improvement irons combined with the classic look that have come to represent Hoeflich irons over the years. The end result is the 3DX Iron."
Says Hoeflich: "... I would say my first design with Nickent Golf is a smashing success. This is an iron for players of all levels looking to experience a considerable amount of forgiveness and the ability to create more power."
Nickent 3DX Irons are cast from 431 stainless steel with a very thin, strong face that creates a high C.O.R. The thinned faced allowed 20 grams of weight to be repositioned to the back of the clubhead in the form of two tungsten-polymer fused inserts, which Nickent calls the XW Inserts.
More weight on the back of the clubhead, plus a wider sole, lets the Nickent 3DX Irons help the golfer get the ball launched on a higher trajectory, and with greater ease from a wide variety of lies. The 3DX Irons are more stable and more forgiving as a result of these design and technological choices.
Nickent also says that golfers will get more carry and a higher ballflight as a result of the "Nickent U-Grooves" on the clubface. The company says that the grooves "have been matched to the center of gravity of the irons to provide the ideal spin rate under all conditions."
Nickent claims that robotic testing using Iron Byron confirms its contention that the 3DX Irons produce extra yardage compared to comparable models on the market.
The Nickent 3DX Irons are available with a UST SpeedRated2 graphite shaft or True Temper ST-90 lightweight steel shafts. The MSRP is $599 with graphite shafts or $499 with steel shafts.
